Billions of Trees
It's easy to think that we can't do anything in the face of environmental decay, but there are amazing projects in process.
Harnessing the Power of Trees for a Greener Tomorrow
"One Billion Trees for Africa"
"A Climate Action Africa initiative aimed at planting 1 billion trees across Africa. This ambitious program is designed to rejuvenate our landscapes, combat climate change, and provide sustainable economic opportunities to countless communities throughout the continent. Trees are crucial for maintaining ecological balance. They absorb carbon dioxide, improve soil health, support biodiversity, and provide shelter and resources for wildlife. In Africa, where desertification and land degradation threaten the livelihoods of millions, reforestation is not just beneficial but essential."
Previously "the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) loses 500,000 hectares (1.2 million acres) of forest cover every year due to shifting cultivation, mining and illegal and informal logging. As part of addressing this, a Congolese government program aspired to plant 1 billion trees between 2019 and 2023, aiming to strengthen climate resilience, alleviate poverty and protect biodiversity. Program officials say they achieved 90% of their target. A forestry specialist says that future reforestation efforts should include feasibility studies, informing tree species selection to maintain ecological balance."
The Nature Conservancy’s "Plant a Billion Trees" campaign is a major forest restoration program. Our goal is to restore and protect forests across the planet to slow the connected crises of climate change and biodiversity loss.
Ethiopia, which made global headlines in 2019 when it launched an ambitious campaign to plant 20 billion trees by the end of this year, says that goal has already been exceeded - and its arboreal mission is set to continue.
The Great Green Wall
"Another ambitious scheme - the pan-African Great Green Wall project. The initiative was launched in 2007 by the African Union, with the aim of creating an 8,000km (nearly 5,000-mile) tree barrier stretching from Senegal to Djibouti by 2030, to halt the southward spread of the Sahara desert. Despite receiving mass-funding from foreign donors, it has struggled to achieve quick success. By 2017 best estimates suggested it had only reached 15% of its target - the worst put it at 4%. According to the UN, the aim of the Green Wall project has now changed from planting a giant structure to creating a 'mosaic of restoration projects across the continent'."
One Tree Planted
One Tree Planted says "Since 2014, we have planted over 135.5 million trees with 378 partners across 82 countries in North America, Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania."
The Trillion Tree Campaign
"The Trillion Tree Campaign is a project which aims to plant one trillion trees worldwide. It seeks to repopulate the world's trees and combat climate change as a nature-based solution. The project was launched at PlantAhead 2018 in Monaco by Plant-for-the-Planet. In the fall of 2018, the project's official website was published in order to register, monitor, and donate trees to reforestation projects around the world. The campaign is a continuation of the activities of the earlier Billion Tree Campaign, instigated by Wangari Maathai, who founded the Green Belt Movement in Africa in 1977. As of 30 May 2021, 164 restoration projects participate in the campaign and 13.96 billion (1.396% of the goal) trees have been planted worldwide."
